Domestic Landscapes 2025

These works explore a historical paradox originating in the Victorian era: as women were increasingly confined to the domestic sphere, their homes became saturated with the imagery of the natural world. Smith investigates the possibility of a secret language shared between women and nature, and a lost wildness channeling through the floral patterns of wallpaper, porcelain, and dresses. By blending real botanical forms with traditional motifs, these drawings trace the evolution of female emotional expression from the Victorian era to the present day, revealing the tension between domestic restraint and untamed interiority.
