In The Land / Homing 2018 - 2020
The ambitious drawings of this period reflect the embodiment of home, reimagined as landscapes. The scale of Texas is reflected in the scale of these often immersive large drawings, as is Smith’s experience of being rooted in place after many nomadic years. Created during her relocation to Austin, TX, a long-term artist residency at 100W Corsicana, and the purchase of her first house, this was a period of exploring relationships and interiority first hand. This body of work explores women’s emotional worlds, marriage, relationships, self discovery, creating spaces and nests, and the use of nature as a reflection of our needs.
