The Landscape
2018 - 2020
The ambitious drawings in The Landscape reflect a shift for the artist out of a liminal period and into stability. Grounded by her relocation to Austin, TX, a residency at 100W Corsicana Artist and Writer Residency, and the purchase of her first home, Smith’s experience of being rooted in place is reflected in the drawings from this period of time. Women’s emotional worlds, marriage, taking up space, and the use of nature as a place of self discovery as well as decoration in domestic design are all explored in the work of this period.
